How Do You Get Faster for Football?

How to Get Faster for Football & Increase Football Speed

It might be the most common question I get from football players, “How do I get Faster for Football?”

Despite how so many people have complicated the issue, increasing football speed is fairly straight-forward and…well, simple!

You need to follow a few basic rules to increase ACTUAL football speed:

1. Get Stronger to Get Faster

Quite simply, to get faster on the football field you need to build incredible strength in the glutes and hamstrings. While the calfs play a role, the real speed-builders are the hams and glutes.

You need to focus part of your workouts on heavy, big exercises like:

Deadlifts

Squats

Box Squats

Front Squats

Romanian Deadlifts

These are all big-time speed builders for football.  If you’re a beginner, go with 4 – 6 sets of 4- 6 reps on these exercises and put them at the beginning of your leg training day.

2. You Must Increase Flexibility

If you want to get faster for football but you’re so tight that you pull a groin getting out of bed, for get it.

Stretch and strengthen the hamstrings, glutes, groin and hip flexors.

Tight hip flexors are often called “breaks”…no one wants breaks when they’re trying to dominate on the football field!

3. You Have to Follow a Speed Training Program that Focuses on Football Speed, Not Track Speed

This might be the number one reason why most guys will never truly get faster on the football field.
They train like track stars! Track guys are fast, yes, but in a straight line. Remember, on the field, we must run fast in all directions, laterally, on angles, etc…train for this and you’ll be faster
